A penny for your thoughts

Do you think migraines should be considered a disability?

Hi ES:

Yes and Yes. I've suffered from menstrual migraines for as long as I can remember. I've tried everything and I mean everything. Every month like clockwork as my hormone levels dip and peek, it all starts...he aura, the nausea, the pain, lack of sleep, ER trips...on and on. I HAVE TO take off work. I've almost passed out in my work bathroom a few times due to pain. It is a cronic disabiity for me with NO cure. The "Cures" (meds) are worse than the migraines themselves. Luckly FMLA allows me to work and not lose my job, but I can only imagine what its like for the daily suffers.

I just read an article that migraine suffers with auras are more prone to stroke. So if it finally happens, then you will have to be "disabled."

Some help: I have done a few things that seem to help a little. I've noticed everything swells around my cycle including the vessles in my head. Diuretics (or anything that dialates the vessles) have provided some relief for me. Coffee, wine, hot sauce, hot tea, hot baths...I had to look up a list of things that diallate the vessles. However, if I'm fully constricted during my cycle and my arteries are already clogged due to bad health, I'm just one step away from a possible permanent disability and I know it.

I am not a health professional, so this is just what works for me. I don't recommend them for everyone. Funny, I've been told my whole life not to drink wine, or coffee..etc to deminish migranges or not to trigger them, but those things actually help.

Just my thoughts. T.

Have you tried a birth control for your menstrual migraines? I know some people don't agree with birth control(s) but I must say, those suckers did the trick for me! I'm on a three-month pack, but you can also be put on a six-month one. Don't know if those would help you, but it's something to think about. I am glad to hear about your work, I know a lot of people end up losing their jobs because of migraines. I also use caffeine to help ease my migraines (almost all migraine rescue meds have caffeine), so I never understood why people say never to drink any. I know drinking to much can cause one but I think the word "never" is a little strong. Speaking of which, have you tried rescue meds for your migraines? I also find that using meditation and or yoga can help with migraines, but once you cross that line of too painful, it doesn't do any good. I'm really sorry to hear your story, and I send positive thoughts and vibes your way! I wish you the best!

I don't think so. There are effective treatments out there to help manage migraines. Look into 5-HTP and serotonin; they're very effective in treating migraine.
